Dina Asher-Smith misses out on Diamond League trophy

Zurich: the European 100 metres, 200m and 4x100m champion lined up over the shorter distance as the fastest woman in the world this year. But where most of her rivals have treated this season as a “down year” without a major championship – a factor that has helped Asher-Smith gain world No 1 status – the British athlete was attempting to push her tired body to one more victory of a memorable summer. Having settled into the blocks for a second time after an initial false-start led to the disqualification of Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor, it was Murielle Ahoure, of Ivory Coast, who built an early lead. Asher-Smith and fellow Ivorian Marie-Josee Ta Lou – who share the world-leading time of 10.85 sec this season – set off in pursuit, but were unable to catch her. Running into a headwind, Ahoure’s winning time was 11.01 sec, with Asher-Smith finishing second in 11.08 sec and Ta Lou third.
